If you have carpet in your home what you need is a vacuum that has a spinning brush roll on the bottom.  A spinning brush roll agitates and disturbs the fiber of the carpet to remove debris and allows the suction to pull it loose from the carpet.  Vacuums that use only suction can be used on certain types of carpets but do not perform well on medium or high pile carpeting and are much harder to push on these surfaces. The brush roll removes the surface debris such as hair and lint but it needs a powerful suction motor that removes the deep down, fiber damaging, particles from the carpet.  The best vacuums for deep cleaning will have a bag, two rows of bristles on the brush roller, and carpet height adjustments.
